We all make mistakes as people and even as Christians. But let’s talk about the common mistakes that most Christians struggle with.

phil

Mistake #1: Not dedicating enough time getting to know the Lord.

Christianity is a more a relationship than a religion. And a relationship takes time and effort. We need to learn how to trust Jesus by getting to know him and walking with him.

Matthew 6:33
33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.

Mistake #2: Not trusting God.

Ever heard the term “The blind leading the blind?” Sadly many Christians are like this and they simply listen to what people tell them and don’t pick up the Bible. I like to ask myself questions like:  Does God have a will for me? If so, what plans does he have for my life?  How should I trust him? These are questions we need to ask ourselves.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; 6 In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.
I think this is a very powerful verse because so many times I speak with atheist and I find that the only concrete reason they don’t believe in Christ is because they simply don’t want too. I don’t believe atheist are who they because of some grand revelation they have discovered, no, it’s a choice, a choice that is fueled by the desire of no God. They tell Me that I have blind faith because I’ve never seen God, but then I tell them that I think it takes more faith to believe that everything around here was created on its own by complete mistake. To that they usually don’t have a response.
Mistake #3: Believing that Christians should not judge anyone at anytime.

“Only God will judge me” said every criminal ever. This is a very big “leave me alone” statement and many Christians are scared to judge someone else, either in fear of then being judged. However the bible makes very specific statements about how to judge someone or inform your brother that he is sinning.  ” Judge not, that ye be not judged” many liberal Christians will tell you, and yes these are the words of Jesus, but let’s not take them out of context (Another mistake Christians make that I will cover in another lesson).

Matthew 7:7

1 “Do not judge, or you too will be judged. 2 For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. 3 “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? 4 How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? 5 You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye. 6 “Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces.

Reading the entire scripture, we can see Jesus is not advocating a hands-off approach for people to use as a barrier for sin, in fact he was explicitly rebuking the hypocrisy of the Pharisees, who were quick to see the sins of others; these Pharisees have a bigger problem, why? Because their sin was greater than those who they judged; it was more like a wooden log than a speck of dust; Which they refused to take it out.

Mistake #4: Ignoring the will of God.

This one is pretty self explanatory. The worst mistake a Christian can make is ignoring the will of God when it’s given upon him. Unfortunately I can share a personal experience where this happened to me; when I was about 17 years old I was at a guest church where the pastor opened up the floor for anyone who wanted to get baptized. I felt something rushing through me to walk forward and pray with the pastor in front of everyone, but instead I ignored it and proceeded to joke about something to my brother. Little did I know, my brother felt the same way and not only did I not go up myself, I caused my brother to delay his baptism too.

John 10:27-28
27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. 28 I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand.

Follow God when he calls to you and have no regrets in doing so. This is where all true Christians stand strong.
